My Story
My name is Pamela Shea and I am committed to the helping individuals solve complex problems and how to affect changes to socially significant world issues. I am a behaviour analyst, a certified action learning coach and full-time professor for the Honours Bachelor of Behavioural Psychology program at St. Lawrence College.
I believe that action learning is a powerful tool which enhances personal effectiveness, leadership and self-confidence. My application of this tool within classrooms and among existing teams has enabled me to observe the development of collaborative teams and enhanced team performance. The process encourages equal participation, improves self-awareness and is effective in helping individuals to identify the real problem and to create solution-based strategies which are both innovative and effective. I am currently in the process of researching how action learning can help to develop interprofessional collaborative skills among university students. Creating positive, respectful teams, encouraging equal participation and teaching individuals to reinforce participation and build on other’s ideas provides the foundation for creating collaborative, innovative, interprofessional teams.
Among my career accomplishments, I have become an ethics champion, serving on several ethical review committees and advocating the best possible researched based services. I have spearheaded the development of an annual conference and became an ACE provider, ensuring BCBA standards were maintained. I love creative problem solving and have applied these skills to my careers as clinical supervisor, senior therapist and behaviour consultant, for over 27 years. I am also a dynamic speaker and have presented at a number of conferences on topics such as motivation, inter-professional collaboration, anxiety, sexuality and development of a best practice model for providing community based behavioural services to adults.
I am a Board-Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA), a Certified Action Learning Coach and a long-standing member of the member of the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI) and Ontario Association of Behaviour Analysts (ONTABA) and have served on a number of committees such as the ONTABA Jurisprudence Committee and the ONTABA conference committee. I am committed to sharing all of my many stories and the dissemination of applied behaviour analysis through interactive education, and mentorship of students in the field and research in socially significant issues. I also enjoy supervising BCBA candidates and have co-authored two books on BCBA supervision.
I have grown and continue to learn strategies to teach and create ethical professionals skilled in the techniques of ABA and research. I feel the importance of creating compassionate clinicians who support diversity, equity and creating foundational skills in self-awareness and dismantling the systems of oppression which may impact their future clients. Integrating topics such as trauma informed care and interprofessional collaboration through experiential learning and action learning are some of my latest strategies. I feel passionate about expanding the field’s reach into addressing world issues. I feel that we can make a difference and this world needs our help.

My Current Involvement
Professor at St Lawrence College
I am a full-time professor for the Honours Bachelor of Behavioural Psychology at St. Lawrence College. I teach topics specializing in applied behavioural analysis (ABA) such as research methods, using ABA to tackle sustainability goals, relational frame theory, functional analysis, and trauma-informed care.
In addition to this, I weave experiential learning, technology, interprofessional collaboration and learning to create skilled, ethical clinicians.
Founding Member of the Ontario Behaviourists for Social Responsibility (OBFSR)
We aim to expand applications of behaviour science by addressing social issues, particularly those with social justice, human rights, and environmental implications. We wish to empower people by providing motivation and reinforcement for addressing social issues. We search for means to fostering research and encourage behaviour scientists and practitioners to take practical action. We will strengthen communities by providing a venue to share and explore. We hope to expand public awareness of behaviour analytic principles and practices that can contribute to addressing social and environmental issues.
Certified Action Learning Coach
As an action learning coach, I facilitate teams to grow, learn, and solve problems. Through the process of action learning, individuals develop self-awareness, leadership, and communication skills; teams become more efficient, interactive, and supportive. Problems are tackled by asking insightful questions and reflections. Together innovative solutions are arrived at by better understanding the true problem. This dynamic process builds teams, teaches problem-solving, and creates synergy among team members.
